Messer recogised by EIGA for safety performance

Messer has been recognised by the European Industrial Gases Association (EIGA) for its performance in occupational safety.

Headquartered in Brussels, Begium, EIGA represents nearly all European companies producing and distributing technical, medical, and food gases.

Association members work together to achieve the highest possible standards of safety and environmental protection in the production, transport and use of gases.

The largest family-run industrial gases specialist in the world received a Gold Star Safety Award for 20 years free of workplace accidents at its Hungarian production location in Kazincbarcika.

EIGA presented a Silver Safety Award in recognition of ten years of accident-free operations at Messer’s production plant for air gases in Salzgitter, Germany.

A Silver Safety Award was also presented to the MG Odra Gas joint venture, in the Czech Republic, for 500,000 hours worked without a workplace accident.

EIGA awarded the Messer location in Mintia, Romania, a Bronze Safety Award for five years of accident-free work.

Each year, traditionally on the second Friday in September, Messer hosts a ’Safety Day’ for its 11,000 employees all over the world to raise awareness of workplace safety throughout its workforce.

This year, the German industrial gases specialist turned the event into a week-long event, with ’Safety Week’ observed in small groups or in connection with online events.

Air Liquide celebrates National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day

As part of National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day in the US yesterday, Air Liquide affirmed its commitment to hydrogen technologies as it strives for a low carbon future.

Celebrated on the 8th October, in recognition of the atomic weight of hydrogen – 1.008 – National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day stands as a global opportunity to celebrate achievements in the industry and raise awareness.

To celebrate the annual event, the industrial gas gaint yesterday shared some of its achievements and projects in North America.

In Nevada, the company is currently building a largescale liquid hydrogen production plant to supply the California mobility market. The plant, which is an investment of over $150m, will be capable of producing over 30 tonnes of liquid hydrogen per day.

For the Canadian market, Air Liquide is installing the “world’s largest” PEM electrolysers to produce carbon-free hydrogen at its plant in Bècancour, Canada. With the installation, approximately 27,000 tonnes of CO2 per year will be prevented.

In a statement, Mike Graff, Chairman & CEO, American Air Liquide Holdings, Inc. and Executive Vice-President, Air Liquide Group, said, “Hydrogen is playing a unique and essential role in the transition to a clean energy economy.”

“On this 6th National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, Air Liquide is proud to be a world leader in the development of hydrogen infrastructure and technologies, especially here in the US.”

“By increasing investment in the hydrogen economy, the U.S. will benefit from game-changing technology for the transportation, power and industrials sectors, all while assuring continued energy system reliability, affordability and security.”

“Hydrogen will play a major role in contributing to the development of a low carbon society, and is key to the expansion of zero emissions vehicles, as hydrogen fuel cells can produce clean, quiet and efficient electricity while emitting only water as exhaust.”

Graff continued, “Hydrogen is also a proven energy storage solution, which enables renewable electricity and supports grid resiliency. Excess electricity generation capacity can be used to produce hydrogen that can then be stored for reuse on the grid as electrical energy or redirected to the transportation sector as fuel.”

Collaboration is critical to unlocking hydrogen’s full potential, says Air Products as it joins the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance

The Alliance was established by the European Commission to create the foundation for a viable and competitive EU industrial hydrogen network.

With expertise across every aspect of the hydrogen for mobility value chain, Air Products said it is well positioned to support the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance’s aims of connecting renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, transmission and distribution as well as demand from industry, mobility and other sectors.

“From production to distribution to stations, we know about hydrogen and the vital role it can play in the EU energy transition,” said Caroline Stancell, Air Products’ European Hydrogen for Mobility and Energy Transition General Manager.

“We also know that – to unlock its full potential – collaborating with other experts in the hydrogen value chain is critical.”

“Joining the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance brings together important voices that can and will make a big difference in achieving a thriving hydrogen ecosystem in Europe.”

Variohm EuroSensor has launched its new ETP21H2 temperature sensor for pressurised hydrogen applications

With a measurement range of -40 to 100 °C and a static operating pressure up to 160 bar, the ETP21H2 sensor features a 316L stainless steel housing for extreme resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and permeation.

The sensor has an industry standard M10 x 1 process connection and flexibility in a choice of electrical supply and output levels of 10…32 VDC for 4…20 mA, or 5 VDC for ratiometric 0.5…4.5 V output.

In a statement, Variohm EuroSensor, said, “The new sensor includes design and manufacturing enhancements specifically targeting hydrogen powered fuel cell applications on mobile vehicles and where other pressurised, and aggressive gas or liquid media processes are controlled.”

“These design enhancements are borne-out with a working temperature range from -40 to +125 °C, exceptional working life and impressive shock and vibration ratings of 1000 g/11 msec. and 16 g peak/20 to 2000 Hz respectively. A low current consumption of just 7.5 mA aids mobile application whilst short-circuit and reverse voltage protection provide further security.”
